Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, who died after spending nearly two weeks in the custody of kidnappers, has been laid to rest amid widespread grief and renewed debate over Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
The late military officer was buried in Katsina on Saturday according to Islamic rites.
The funeral attracted relatives, serving and retired military personnel, government representatives, community leaders and sympathisers who gathered to pay their final respects.
Rabe’s death has sparked fresh concerns about the vulnerability of citizens to criminal violence, particularly in northern Nigeria, where kidnapping and banditry remain persistent threats.
The retired general and his wife were reportedly abducted on May 30 while travelling along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli route in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident shocked many Nigerians because of Rabe’s distinguished military background and years of service to the country.
During the burial ceremony, prayers and Qur’anic recitations were offered for the deceased, while mourners reflected on his contributions to national security and his commitment to protecting the nation during his years in uniform.
Many attendees struggled to conceal their emotions as tributes poured in for the late officer.
Several speakers described his death as a painful reminder of the insecurity affecting communities across the country.
“A man who spent decades defending Nigeria should not have met such a tragic end,” a mourner said.
“His passing highlights the urgent need for stronger action against criminal groups terrorising innocent people.”
Residents in Katsina also expressed sadness over the development, arguing that the incident demonstrates that insecurity continues to affect people regardless of their status or background.
Another resident, Dr Sama’ila Balarabe, said the loss extended beyond the immediate family.
“This is a heartbreaking moment for Katsina and for the nation,” he said.
“General Rabe dedicated his life to public service, and his death has left many people deeply disturbed.”
Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters described the deceased as a dedicated and professional officer whose contributions to military operations, particularly in the fight against insurgency, would not be forgotten.
Military authorities stated that Rabe’s commitment to national unity and duty remained an example for members of the Armed Forces.
They also pledged to continue pursuing those responsible for the crime and other terrorist networks operating across the country.
Furthermore, reactions to the retired general’s death have continued to spread across social media platforms, where Nigerians voiced frustration over the country’s security situation.
Many users questioned the level of protection available to ordinary citizens if a retired senior military officer could become a victim of kidnapping and subsequently lose his life.
Several commentators urged security agencies to intensify efforts against bandits, terrorists and other criminal groups, warning that restoring public confidence would require visible and sustained improvements in security operations nationwide.
