The Delta State Police Command on Friday confirmed the gruesome killing of a retired judge, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, whose body was found bound in her Asaba residence.
The murder, discovered late on Sunday night, has triggered widespread outrage, fear, and heightened security concerns within Asaba.
Justice Okogwu, an Asaba-born former judicial officer, was found lifeless in her home located directly behind the facilities of The Pointer Newspapers in Asaba.
According to preliminary findings, her attackers “bound her legs and hands” before ransacking her residence, an assault investigators believe was targeted and methodical.
Giving emotional details of the tragic incident, the victim’s brother, Ogbueshi Godfrey Okogwu, narrated the family’s shock while questioning the suspicious disappearance of the residence’s night security guard.
Okogwu told The Guardian, “My eldest sister was murdered in her house on Sunday night. We only received the news on Monday morning, so we presume the incident happened during the night.
“A major red flag is the disappearance of the night security guard. The morning guard claimed he met the gate wide open when he arrived. He said he simply sat there. Sat there doing what?”
He further confirmed that the family had submitted details of the private security company that deployed the guards, urging investigators to expand the probe to the contractor responsible for the judge’s security.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, formally confirmed aspects of the ongoing investigation, noting arrests had been made within the judge’s security ring.
“Some of the security are in police custody while one of them is at large,” Edafe stated.
Officials of the Asaba division say the disappearance of the night guard, whose name has been withheld for investigation integrity, spurred immediate internal questioning.
