National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has warned that Nigeria must guard its democratic system jealously, as it remains the only functioning democracy in the Sahel.
Ribadu gave the warning on Thursday at a forum on preventing violence and conflict in northern Nigeria, held in Abuja. The event was organised by the National Peace Committee, the Kukah Centre, and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Against the backdrop of military takeovers in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad, Ribadu noted that Nigeria stands as the last beacon of constitutional governance in the region.
He said, “We are going through painful times, but this phase will pass. “Nations across our region, from the Sahel to East Africa and South Asia, face similar or even more protracted challenges. Nigeria remains the only functioning democracy in the entire Sahel, and we must protect that achievement.”
Ribadu vowed that the Nigerian state would take firm action against those threatening national peace and unity.
He further stated, “Let me be clear: the Nigerian state remains fully committed to law, order, and the protection of citizens.
“Anyone, individual or group, who exploits communities, spreads terror, or attempts to undermine national unity will face coordinated and decisive action, in line with our obligations to protect human rights and safeguard lives.”
The NSA revealed that Nigeria had secured 775 terrorism-related convictions, underscoring progress in counter-terrorism operations through collaboration among security agencies, communities, and the judiciary.
Ribadu emphasised that most security challenges begin at the local level and called for greater involvement of communities, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and subnational governments in peacebuilding.
“When communities are empowered to resolve their own disputes and prevent violence, the need for deployment of armed forces reduces significantly,” he said.
He urged that dialogues be translated into action that rebuilds trust and enhances resilience across northern Nigeria.
Arms Offer False Security – Kukah
Earlier, Bishop Matthew Kukah, Convener of the National Peace Committee, stressed that insecurity had affected every Nigerian directly or indirectly.
He cautioned against the belief that arming communities would solve the problem, describing weapons as offering only a “false sense of security.”
Kukah said, “There is a growing belief that communities can defend themselves by arming up. But arms will not solve our problems. They offer a false sense of security. And when peace returns, where will those weapons go?”
Quoting scripture, Kukah added, “It is not accidental that Jesus asked Peter to put back his sword. God’s teachings do not change; circumstances may change, but the truth does not.”
He called on civil society to embrace its vocation and urged the inclusion of women and young people in shaping peace efforts.
