Fresh tension is brewing in Rivers State as the State House of Assembly expressed concern on Friday over Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s continued delay in submitting a fresh list of commissioner‑nominees for screening.
Naijaonpoint reports that the issue was raised during plenary, with lawmakers warning that prolonged vacancies in key ministries could hinder governance and public service delivery.
The Assembly recalled that, in its first sitting after the suspension of emergency rule in September 2025, it had urged the governor to forward a new list of commissioners to restore functional governance in the state.
Since then, Fubara has dismissed all commissioners appointed during the political crisis, citing their lack of constitutional approval, while retaining only those screened by the previous Assembly before the crisis, some of whom were reassigned.
As a result, many ministries are now overseen by permanent secretaries rather than commissioners. Critical portfolios such as Education and Communication remain without political heads.
During plenary, members questioned the governor’s prolonged silence and called for immediate rectification to avoid further disarray in state administration.
Lawmakers argued that the prolonged absence of substantive commissioners undermines accountability, effective leadership and policy implementation in ministries that directly affect citizens’ welfare.
At the time of filing this report, the governor is yet to react.
