THE Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara welcomed members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), effectively putting to rest months of speculation that he had left the party.

The delegation included BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, former Chairman Ahmed Makarfi, elder statesman Olabode George, and Senator Abdul Ningi.

While there have been calls for Governor Fubara to defect to the APC, some believe his chances of securing a second term would be slim if he remains with the PDP. The governor, however, has been silent about his plans.

The delegation stated that their visit to Rivers State was aimed at fostering peace and reinforcing old alliances.

In a speech at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara expressed doubts about his party membership but acknowledged that the BoT’s visit provided some reassurance of his standing in the party.

He remarked, “What is important this afternoon is that we are still members of the party, and the owners of the party have visited us. For those spreading rumors and propaganda, this visit will dispel those falsehoods and reaffirm that we remain members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).”

Senator Adolphus Wabara, addressing the governor, expressed concerns about the possibility of the PDP losing Rivers State to strong opposition, which he said could have serious implications for the nation’s future.

“We were alarmed, Sir, when we heard or read speculations that the party might lose Rivers State. If we lose Rivers State, Nigeria’s future is at risk,” he said.

“We don’t want a repeat of what happened in 2015 and 2023. The individuals you see here are neutral, but as the conscience of the party, we must adhere to the rule of law. Any action taken in accordance with the law may be delayed, but it cannot be wrong.”

Wabara commended Governor Fubara for his patience and dedication to the PDP, despite the challenges posed by the party’s leadership.

“As a Governor, your resilience, wisdom, and continued loyalty to the party are commendable. On behalf of the party, I thank you, and I assure you that the Board of Trustees, under my leadership and with these committed Nigerians, will address the matter constitutionally,” Wabara concluded.
