PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to environmental justice and sustainable development.
The university, which will be located in Tai, Ogoni, is expected to provide educational and economic opportunities for the region while addressing long-standing environmental concerns.
Speaking at the signing ceremony at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that the university’s creation represents more than just an educational institution; it is a step toward empowering the Ogoni people and acknowledging their decades-long struggle for environmental restoration.
He stated that Ogoni has played a pivotal role in shaping national and global discussions on environmental degradation and sustainable development, and the establishment of the university is a testament to the government’s resolve to address their grievances.
Tinubu highlighted that the university will serve as a center of excellence focused on equipping young Nigerians with the skills needed to tackle environmental challenges, develop clean energy solutions, and contribute to national sustainable economic growth.
He thanked the National Assembly, particularly the Senate and House of Representatives leadership, for properly considering the bill and commended the Ogoni delegation for their steadfast advocacy for justice.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, also stated that the university will prioritize interdisciplinary programs in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology, preparing students to address both regional and national ecological issues.
National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, emphasized that the establishment of FUET is a step toward inclusive development and environmental sustainability in Ogoniland, addressing concerns that have persisted for decades.
Leader of the Ogoni delegation, Senator Mpigi Barinada, expressed gratitude to the President for signing the bill and acknowledged the contributions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and NSA Ribadu in facilitating its passage.
He described the university as a beacon of hope for the Ogoni people and a strong motivation for them to embrace peace and development.
