Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will remain actively involved in Rivers State politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election, dismissing reports that his frequent trips to the state amount to plans to relocate.
Wike explained that his visits were aimed at maintaining contact with his political base and personally monitoring developments rather than abandoning his responsibilities in Abuja.
The minister spoke on Wednesday during his monthly media parley in Abuja, where he addressed reports concerning his movements between the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.
According to Wike, he could not afford to stay in Abuja and depend on assurances from political associates that all was well in Rivers State.
He said his physical presence was necessary to assess political activities, engage with his supporters and determine whether agreed plans were being implemented.
“It’s not about relocating, it’s about coming home to relate with the people and talk to them, and also do those things you know how to do very well, not to take chances,” he said.
Wike maintained that the 2027 election period was politically crucial, stressing that he would not remain passive while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar sought to secure victory.
“I can tell you my parents are still very much alive. Of course, this is time for politics. You want me to fold my hand for Atiku Abubakar to come and win the election?” the minister asked.
He added that his continued engagement in Rivers politics was part of his strategy to remain informed and ensure that his political interests were adequately protected ahead of the 2027 polls.
