RSIEC Shifts Rivers LG Polls To August 30

RSIEC

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date of August 30, 2025, for the conduct of local government elections in the state.

Initially slated for August 9, the polls were shifted due to the state of emergency declared in Rivers, which disrupted earlier preparations.

Announcing the change on Monday during a stakeholder meeting at the RSIEC headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Commission’s Chairman, Michael Odey, said the decision became necessary to ensure a smooth electoral process.

“In view of the new realities in the state, it has become imperative to adjust the electoral calendar. The local government elections will now hold on Saturday, August 30, 2025,” Odey stated.

According to the revised timetable, political parties are to hold their primaries between July 31 and August 3. The submission of candidates’ names has been fixed for August 3 and 4.

Naijaonpoint reports that the electioneering campaigns will commence on August 12, with the recruitment of ad-hoc staff scheduled for August 16. The final list of candidates is expected to be displayed on August 20, 2025.

Party leaders, electoral observers, and media representatives were present at the meeting where the updated guidelines were unveiled. The session provided an opportunity for stakeholders to review and discuss modalities for the upcoming polls.

RSIEC assured residents of its readiness to conduct free, fair, and credible elections despite the recent disruptions in the state.
