The film opened to just $1.3 million on Nov. 7, placing it among the lowest wide releases in history.
It also marks Sweeney’s third box-office misfire of the year, following Americana and Eden, giving the Euphoria star an unfortunate record for most flops of 2025.
Following the weak debut, Rose, known for Orange Is the New Black and Batwoman, took to Threads on Nov. 10 to share her frustrations, revealing she was previously attached to the project.
Ruby Rose slams Sydney Sweeney and her team for “ruining” the Christy Martin biopic:
“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you… pic.twitter.com/Z9Kd26ywT0

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing,” she wrote, explaining she had been set to play Cherry and that much of the cast and creative team had personal ties to the story. “It’s part of why I stayed in acting.”
Rose then directly criticized Sweeney’s public comments about being proud of the film’s message despite its poor box office.
“For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people.’ None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us,” she claimed, ending with: “You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”
