A Russian drone has reportedly been spotted flying over Moldova and towards Romania as Bucharest issues an urgent security alert. Iași International Airport in Romania has temporarily suspended all flights following the alert.
The country issued an extreme alert warning to residents as air traffic was suspended, saying “objects could possibly fall from the airspace”. People were told to shelter in basements or civil protection shelters and stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls.
This came after several aeroplanes were spotted circling above Chisinau Airport without landing. Unconfirmed reports suggested this was caused by a drone that also violated Moldova’s airspace.
Initial reports also said the drone that entered the airspace of Romania and Moldova was a Russian Shahed drone, but this has not yet been confirmed.
Back in June, another drone incident was reported in Romania. A sea drone exploded in the port of the Romanian city of Constanta. The Ministry of National Defence stated that the drone self-detonated and that it is not part of the Romanian Army’s equipment, but is of the type used in the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s navy claimed Russian electronic warfare disrupted one of its sea drones, which then drifted towards the coast of Romania.
