The Ukrainian military reported that it killed 39 Russian troops and destroyed multiple weapon systems and vehicles, but that Russia activated air strikes after it failed to advance into southern Ukraine.

Operational Command South shared the report in a Facebook post on Thursday, saying that Ukrainian forces attacked Russian weapons and equipment in the Kherson administrative district in the southern part of the country. The online report is the latest positive news from Ukrainian armed forces that have focused their efforts on reclaiming the southern regions of Ukraine occupied by Russia.

In addition to the killed Russian troops, the command said it destroyed four S-300 missile systems, a radar station, a mortar and nine armored and military vehicles. The command said it hit two depots of Russian weapons and equipment in Kherson and nearby Kakhovka, in addition to air defense systems.

“The situation in the area under our responsibility remains tense, but the armed forces are controlling its development,” the command said in .... “The enemy continues to fight on the occupied frontier of the defense. There are no changes in the composition or position.”

Ukraine reports that it has carried out more successful attacks on Russian troops. Pictured above are craters created by a Ukrainian rocket attack on Kherson’s Antonovsky Bridge on July 21, 2022 over the Dnipro River.

Ukraine’s Operational Command South also said in ... that Russian troops activated artillery and air strikes after being unable to advance on land.

Armed with US-supplied HIMARS advanced multiple rocket launchers, Ukrainian forces have reported successful strikes on Russian military targets in recent days.

The reported gains come as Ukraine pushes for a significant counter-offensive in the Russian-occupied south in hopes of turning the war in its favor. They also come as Russian troops have seen an estimated 75,000 of their troops killed or wounded, and others are said to be facing serious morale problems.

The Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, said in a study published Wednesday that Russian forces are reportedly preparing to prevent Ukraine’s counteroffensive near the border of Kherson’s administrative district.

Citing Ukrainian intelligence services, the think tank said Russian forces are transporting equipment across the south. Russia is trying to consolidate administrative control over occupied territories in preparation for a possible annexation.

Russian Air Force has shot down five missiles in the Donetsk and Kherson regions, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov told Russian state news agency TASS on Thursday.

In addition, Russian air defense systems also repulsed a Ukrainian attack on the Antonovka Bridge, which leads into the Kherson region, Kirill Stremousov, a Russian military administrator, told TASS.
