Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Thursday visited former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, at his Abuja residence, heightening speculations over the brewing crisis ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party’s national convention.
Naijaonpoint understands that Lamido, a frontline contender for the PDP national chairmanship, is currently in court challenging his exclusion from contesting the top position.
The meeting between the two party heavyweights has sparked suggestions that both men may boycott the convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan.
Recall that the Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier restrained the PDP from going ahead with the convention.
Justice Peter Lifu granted an interim order stopping the exercise pending the determination of a suit filed by Lamido.
The judge held that the restraining order would remain in force until the substantive case is decided.
The former Jigawa governor dragged the PDP to court after allegedly being denied nomination forms for the chairmanship race despite having procured them.
He is contesting his exclusion from the contest, insisting the party breached its own rules and the Electoral Act.
In an earlier development, Saraki had declared that he is not in support of PDP proceeding with the planned National Convention.
According to Saraki, conflicting court orders on the proposed convention leave a doubt as to whether the outcome of the convention will stand.
He, therefore, withdrew his support for the convention and urged the PDP leaders to instead set up a caretaker committee to manage the affairs of the party until all issues are resolved.
