While Steve Clarke’s side will be hoping to secure progression to the knockout stages by finishing top two in their group, they will be further boosted by the knowledge that the four best third-place finishers will also progress to the last 16.

It means their chances of making the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time ever should be increased.

Giving his Euro 2024 predictions ahead of the tournament, Stelling told talkSPORT that Scotland might just surprise a few out in Germany.

“Is Coisty listening to this?” he laughed, teasing his co-presenter and former Scottish international Ally McCoist, before going on to give his thoughts.

“I think that they will get through the group stage,” he said. “And I think that’s an achievement for them as well – don’t mean to be condescending.

“Tough opening game against Germany but I expect them to go through maybe at the expense of Hungary.”
