Sean Kingston will spend three and a half years behind bars after being convicted of a $1 million fraud scheme.
The 35-year-old singer, born Kisean Paul Anderson, was found guilty in March alongside his mother, Janice Turner, who received a five-year sentence last month.
Federal prosecutors accused the pair of falsely claiming to have made wire payments for luxury items, including high-end cars, jewelry, and a custom-made bed, but the transactions were never completed.
In court on Friday, Kingston apologized and said he had learned from his mistakes. His lawyer asked that he be allowed to self-surrender, citing health issues, but the judge ordered him into custody immediately.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Anton called Kingston “a thief and a conman, plain and simple.”
Defense attorneys countered that Kingston, who rose to fame at 17 with hits like “Beautiful Girls” and “Fire Burning,” was “a soft guy who grew up poor when he rose to fame overnight,” with “no idea how to run a business [and] no idea how much money is in his bank account.”
