There was heightened tension on Monday at the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja as security operatives barred members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) from holding a scheduled meeting.
The meeting, which was expected to be held in the NEC Hall of the PDP’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, was disrupted by a heavy security presence.
Naijaonpoint reports that uniformed officers reportedly sealed off the premises and ejected those already inside.
According to Daily Trust, a senior officer was overheard issuing strict instructions to his men, directing that no form of gathering should take place within the building.
“Make sure nobody is in the hall there. That is the instruction. I heard there is another hall upstairs. Make sure nobody is meeting there,” he ordered.
BoT members who had already arrived at the secretariat were seen loitering outside and whispering among themselves, unsure of the next line of action.
The party has been grappling with internal wrangling since its controversial presidential primary in 2022, which many believe triggered a series of unresolved grievances among top stakeholders.
The latest flashpoint revolves around the tussle over who occupies the position of National Secretary. The power struggle has further polarised the party, with Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, and Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, reportedly leading rival factions within the National Working Committee.
