The Senate has adjourned plenary for two weeks to allow lawmakers to focus on the defence of the 2025 budget by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the adjournment on Tuesday, stating that plenary will resume on January 28, when the budget report will be presented.
In his opening address, “Rising to the Greatness of Our Calling,” Akpabio urged his colleagues to recommit to the transformative task of nation-building.
He said, “This moment is significant. “History is calling on us to make a difference—to write a new narrative for our nation, one of progress, justice, and boundless possibilities.”
The Senate President described the 2025 budget as more than just a financial document, emphasizing its role as a “blueprint of the aspirations and hopes of millions of Nigerians.”
He urged lawmakers to ensure that the budget serves as a catalyst for development, equity, and justice, aligning with the collective dreams of the Nigerian people.
Electoral Reform As A Priority
Naijaonpoint gathered that Akpabio also highlighted electoral reform as a critical agenda for the legislative year, noting its importance as the nation prepares for the next electoral cycle.
He said, “Reforming Nigeria’s electoral system is both a legislative duty and a moral imperative. “It is our chance to gift the Nigerian people a system that is transparent, credible, and reflective of their will.”
The Senate President stressed the need to restore trust in Nigeria’s democratic processes, describing it as fundamental to achieving lasting progress.
Akpabio urged lawmakers to seek divine guidance in their deliberations, emphasizing the significance of their work beyond legislative duties.
“Our work here is not just about legislation; it is about shaping the future of a nation and leaving a legacy for generations to come,” he stated.
The Senate President called for unity, bold action, and visionary leadership to tackle Nigeria’s challenges, urging his colleagues to approach their duties with patriotic fervour.
As lawmakers embark on budget defence sessions, Akpabio reiterated the importance of aligning the federal government’s financial priorities with Nigeria’s development goals.
