The new movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility now has an official release date. The cast includes Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw.
Focus Features has announced that Sense and Sensibility will be released in U.S. theaters on September 11, 2026, followed by a September 26 theatrical debut in the U.K. This comes after Shaw, who plays Mrs. Jennings, provided an update earlier in November that filming had wrapped on the adaptation.
The Jane Austen book, which was the iconic author’s first published book, follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood after the death of their father and as they navigate romantic relationships. Edgar-Jones plays Elinor, Creed-Miles plays Marianne, and Outlander‘s Balfe plays their mother, Mrs. Dashwood, in the upcoming adaptation.
Georgia Oakley directs the new take on Sense and Sensibility, the first of many to tackle Austen’s source material. The 1995 movie directed by Ang Lee and starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet as Elinor and Marianne is widely considered to be one of the all-time best Jane Austen adaptations, holding a 97% critical score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
1995’s Sense and Sensibility received seven Academy Award nominations. Thompson was not only nominated for her performance, but also won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. This adaptation was also a massive box office hit, grossing nearly $135 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $16 million.
Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are among the producers for 2026’s Sense and Sensibility. Focus Features and Working Title have collaborated on several feature film adaptations of Austen’s work in the past, from 2005’s Pride and Prejudice and 2020’s Emma. This version of Pride and Prejudice received four Academy Award nominations, including Keira Knightley for Best Actress, Best Achievement in Art Direction, Best Achievement in Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
These past collaborations bode well for the new Sense and Sensibility, as does how well some of Daisy Edgar-Jones’ movies have performed at the box office in recent years. 2024’s Twisters made $372 million worldwide, $276 million of which was from the domestic box office. Against a reported budget of $24 million, 2022’s Where the Crawdads Sing earned $144 million worldwide.
