Scores of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Tarai in Kibiya Local Government Area of Kano State have reportedly joined the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The development marks another major defection in the state’s political landscape as supporters continue to align with the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Public Enlightenment in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Balarabe Kiru, the defectors were led by the APC Woman Leader in Tarai, Hajiya Sabuwa Tarai.
Tarai explained that the group’s decision to dump the APC was driven by the visible development projects and pro-people programmes executed by Governor Yusuf’s administration across the state.
“We are impressed by the numerous projects executed by Gov. Yusuf at the local government and state level,” she said, adding that the governor’s leadership style has rekindled their trust in the NNPP’s vision for Kano State.
Welcoming the defectors, the Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Alhaji Adamu A. Kibiya, commended their decision and assured them that they would be treated equally within the NNPP fold. He urged them to unite with existing members to further strengthen the party at the grassroots.
“You have taken the right decision by joining the NNPP, a party that prioritises the welfare of the people. I assure you that you will enjoy equal rights and opportunities like every other member,” Kibiya said.
He called on the new members to work collectively to sustain the achievements of Governor Yusuf’s administration and ensure the NNPP’s continued dominance in Kano politics.
The statement also hinted that more APC members from neighbouring wards in Kibiya Local Government are expected to defect in the coming weeks as part of the commissioner’s grassroots mobilisation efforts.
