A deadly mining accident has claimed seven lives in Plateau State. The ground gave way under a group of workers late Wednesday at a site in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
The collapse struck around 7pm yesterday while the men were still on the job.
Locals rushed to the scene as soon as word spread. Fellow miners and residents dug through the debris in a desperate bid to reach those trapped below.
By the time they pulled the victims out, it was too late. All seven were found dead.
The sudden cave-in sent shockwaves through the quiet community.
Families gathered at the site in tears as news of the deaths filtered out. Many described the loss as a heavy blow to households that depended on the daily wages these men brought home.
One resident who helped with the recovery effort said the scene was heartbreaking.
“We kept digging, hoping someone would still be alive. When we finally reached them, there was nothing left to do but pray.”
Another community voice pointed to the dangerous conditions many local miners face every day.
“These young men left home to feed their families. The pit was deep, and nothing protected them. How many more must die before someone acts?”
Local leaders have called on the Plateau State Government and mining authorities to step in.
They want immediate support for the bereaved families and stronger safety rules enforced at informal mining sites across the area.
Residents say accidents like this have become too common.
Many workers still dig with little equipment or oversight.
Community members are now urging officials to bring in experts, regulate the sites properly, and prevent another tragedy from striking Barkin Ladi.
