Several people shot in Danish town as police hunt gunmen

Several people have been shot in a Danish town in what police suspect was a criminal underworld showdown. The shooting happened in Holbæk, with police now at several locations across the town as officers hunt for those responsible.

Central and West Zealand Police said several people had been hit in the shooting, but they have not yet provided details about their conditions. The force said it currently suspects the incident was linked to a “showdown in the criminal environment”.Police were called to the Agervang neighbourhood, formerly known as Grønneparken, at around 3.45pm local time on Sunday. The residential area is located in the southern part of Holbæk and is made up of five-storey apartment blocks.Agervang was previously included on Denmark’s official list of so-called “parallel societies”, but was removed from the list in 2022. The perpetrators remain at large, with preliminary police information indicating they fled the area in a white car following the shooting.

Police are now searching for those responsible and have appealed for witnesses who may have information about the incident.

Officers have specifically asked anyone who saw people or vehicles leaving the scene to contact police on 114. The force is also seeking pictures or video footage from the area.

It is not yet known what triggered the shooting or whether it involved a local dispute.

Pictures from Agervang showed police and ambulances in the residential area following the incident.

A large area has been cordoned off, with police dogs also examining the scene.

Police have so far provided few details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting and said further information would be released later.

Police said of those hit: “We cannot provide any further information about their condition at this time.”

Holbæk Mayor Christina Krzyrosiak Hansen said she has been in contact with the Danish government following Sunday’s shooting.

In a statement on Facebook, she said: “Police suspect that this is a showdown in the criminal environment, and I have no words for how angry it makes me that hardened criminals should put other people’s safety at risk.

“I take this very seriously.”

The mayor added that she was following the case closely.
