The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has denied social media posts that it directed Muslims to pray for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a disclaimer issued Monday, April 13, 2026, the Council described the reports as “false” and “misleading”.
The statement, signed by Secretary General Nafiu Baba Ahmad, said anonymous online handles had falsely alleged that the council called for prayers to remove the INEC Chairman and threatened that elections would not hold if the demand was not met.
“The Council categorically dissociates itself from these claims in their entirety,” the statement read. “At no time did the Council issue any directive, statement, or call of such nature.”
Council Maintains Position on INEC Chairman
While disowning the social media posts, the SCSN reaffirmed its earlier position that the INEC Chairman should resign or be relieved of his duties. The Council said the stance is not driven by political bias but by “serious concerns arising from his actions and dispositions,” which it claims show “clear prejudice against Islam and Muslims, as documented in his widely circulated legal brief”.
According to the Council, such sentiments are “fundamentally inconsistent with the principles of neutrality, integrity, and patriotism required of a holder of so sensitive a national office.”
Call for Caution and Official Channels
The SCSN urged the public, particularly the Muslim Ummah and the media, to disregard unofficial narratives and rely only on communications issued through the Council’s recognized channels.
It added that the Council operates above partisan interests and will not allow itself to be used “as a tool for political manipulation” while remaining committed to justice, equity, and peaceful coexistence.
