Accountant and science teacher Jane Kyalo has condemned many Kenyans for failing to support gospel singer Betty Bayo while she battled blood cancer, which ultimately led to her death on 10th November 2025.
Kyalo expressed frustration over how people only offer sympathy after someone has passed away, rather than extending help when it could make a difference. She highlighted that during Bayo’s illness, only her family and close friends provided care, leaving her to fight the disease largely alone.
“She battled the disease alone. In that hospital bed was only her and her inner circle — her family. Now, everyone is talking about her after her demise. It’s sad, though. Rest in peace, Betty Bayo,” Kyalo stated.
Her comments sparked a wide range of reactions online. Some agreed with Kyalo, lamenting that society often praises people posthumously rather than offering support when it matters most.
“It’s sad that people have so many good things to say about you, but you have to die first,” one user commented.
Others questioned Kyalo’s perspective, arguing that the singer’s illness was private and not widely publicized, making it difficult for the public to intervene.
“What’s with the guilt trip you are trying to take Kenyans on? How did you want Kenyans to help her battle the cancer when it was never made public? At some point, cancer can’t even be fought. We will talk about her because she was a celebrity and people liked her music,” another stated.
Kyalo’s remarks have reignited discussions about how society treats the sick and the importance of offering support before it’s too late, highlighting a broader conversation on compassion and timely action in Kenya.
