Speaking during a Thursday visit to Kuje, Wike didn’t hold back, telling Shekwolo that winning an election is just the first step, and the real test begins after the victory celebrations.
“Don’t be a chairman that is an ‘away’ chairman; be a chairman that is a ‘home’ chairman,” Wike thundered, urging the new leader to stay close to the people who elected him. He warned against the common trap where politicians win offices but disappear from their communities, leaving residents frustrated and unheard.
The minister stressed that visibility and accessibility are non-negotiable for local government leaders. He told Shekwolo that staying in touch with community leaders, youth groups, and residents is key to solving problems like sanitation, infrastructure, and welfare.
Wike also reminded the gathering that the people deserve leaders who listen, act, and are always present, not those who treat public office as a ceremonial title. “Leadership is about patience, responsibility, and constant engagement. Don’t run away from listening to your people,” he added.
