A tourist was left seriously injured following an incident on the Greek island of Skiathos, according to local media. A 52-year-old Italian woman was thrown onto the ground by the turbine wash of a plane as it took off from the island’s airport, state broadcaster ERT reports.
The turbine wash sprays pure demineralised water and specialised detergents into the engine compressor, and removes other materials that could affect the aircraft. The exact circumstances of the incident are not clear, but local reports say the woman was hit by a blast of air.
She sustained serious head injuries as she stood near a road next to Skiathos Airport known for plane spotting.
She was taken to the Polyiatreio medical centre and given a CT scan before being airlifted to Volos General Hospital, on the mainland, for further treatment.

However, only specially trained and certified pilots are allowed to land commercial aircraft there, and must apply maximum automatic braking and reverse thrust right away to slow the plane down safely
Sometimes airflow from jet engines can be strong enough to knock people and their belongings over, even causing injury, as the planes fly low in the sky.
