According To Our Reporter, the founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has faulted Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s decision to shut down the Onitsha Main Market, describing it as economically damaging and poorly thought out.

Speaking in line with a Daily Independent report of Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Okorie said traders stayed away from the market not out of laziness but out of fear for their lives due to insecurity and sit-at-home threats.

He stressed that Onitsha Main Market, the largest in West Africa, is the economic backbone of Anambra State, and closing it only worsens hardship. Okorie questioned how an economist and former Central Bank Governor could ignore the severe economic impact of such action.
