Sowore Departs Nigeria For US, Canada Tour Ahead Of 2027 Election

Omoyele Sowore New

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, is set to depart Nigeria for the United States and Canada as part of activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sowore left Nigeria on Wednesday night for the North American tour, during which he is expected to visit Washington, D.C., and meet with Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders.

The tour will also provide an opportunity for the AAC candidate to reunite with his immediate family after spending an extended period in Nigeria.

In a statement, the Sowore 2027 campaign said his departure came after months of arrests, detention and legal battles involving the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The development followed the DSS announcement that its prosecutors would pause the cybercrime case against Sowore over his description of President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.

Sowore and his legal team had previously challenged the case through a series of legal proceedings.

Despite his absence from the country, the campaign said activities would continue, with Sowore expected to participate virtually in campaign engagements while in the US and Canada.

He is also expected to attend meetings and other engagements with Nigerians in the diaspora during the tour.

According to the campaign, Sowore is expected to return to Nigeria before the end of September to continue his presidential campaign ahead of the 2027 election.

“The #Sowore2027 campaign will continue at full strength across Nigeria,” the statement said.

The campaign said Sowore’s political message would remain centred on “revolutionary transformation, equal rights and revolutionary justice,” while opposing what it described as the recycling of Nigeria’s political establishment.
