New plans for another Star Trek movie have been revealed in a Paramount report, confirming in what direction the franchise is heading next. The Star Trek movies have always been a prominent part of the larger sci-fi story’s timeline. However, the latest theatrical release came in 2016 with Star Trek: Beyond, the series moving into a TV show focus ever since.
However, according to Variety, there are plans in place for a new Star Trek movie, in hopes of reinvigorating the sci-fi franchise on the big screen. However, it will not follow the timeline of J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin Timeline reboot. No information has been revealed about the upcoming project, which appears to be in early days as of writing.
The move to make a new Star Trek movie comes a little over three months after Paramount and Skydance’s merger, leaving CEO David Ellison in charge of the company. One of the core visions surrounding the entertainment studio’s future is revitalizing dormant franchises. In the case of Star Trek, this means getting it back onto the big screen.
Since its last theatrical release in 2016, the franchise has been relegated to streaming, with the release of new shows in the original timeline. This includes finished series like Discovery and Picard, ongoing shows like Strange New Worlds, and upcoming series like Starfleet Academy. It’s unclear how the next movie will tie into the timeline, or if it’ll be standalone.
It won’t be the first time the series has tried moving in the direction of films in recent years. The critically panned Star Trek: Section 31 was released in January 2025, following Michelle Yeoh as Georgiou, reprising her role from Discovery. This new movie seems like it’ll be quite different, meant to revive the franchise for the big screen instead of necessarily tying into anything else.
As of writing, there haven’t been many definitive updates about another Star Trek movie. A script for a sequel to Beyond was in the works from Steve Yockey in March 2024, while Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez was said to have her own film in development too. This latest news makes it sound like a new idea may be prioritized instead.
Even without any information about the film as of writing, it sounds like it’ll be approached as a major new project that defines the franchise moving forward. Whether it’ll be a reboot or add onto the existing lore of the universe remains unclear. What seems definitive, though, is that it’ll be a major move for Star Trek and its future endeavors.
