The Star Wars fandom thought they knew the story of Qui-Gon Jinn’s death, and his return from the Force. But a shocking new twist has revealed the Jedi Master was killed years before the The Phantom Menace even began, potentially changing the movie canon forever.
The news come in Marvel’s first official preview of Star Wars: Jedi Knights #9, a comic series exploring adventures of the Jedi leading up to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. After facing a deadly lightsaber battle with a masked assassin, Qui-Gon was left on the brink of death. Now it is confirmed: the attack killed Qui-Gon, before Jedi medicine brought him back to life.
This is only the first glimpse of the coming issue from Marc Guggenheim, Madibek Musabekov, and Luis Guerrero. Which means even more revelations into this strange new insight into Qui-Gon’s life could be here sooner than fans realize.

The confirmation that Qui-Gon was killed by the poisoned blade of the mysterious ‘Corlis Rath’ is a twist few saw coming, even though the possibility of Qui-Gon’s premature death was teased in the series’ first issue. At the time, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s vision was explained as simply an event that could occur, leaving most to assume misdirection. But apparently not.
We suspected that the injury and toxins could play a far greater role. Not only for the series, but as a means to explain how Qui-Gon learned the secret of Force Ghosts. And by extension, what knowledge he passed to Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as Yoda (and Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy).
