The Star Wars saga continues on Disney+ with the second season of the animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions. And we now know which animation studios will be involved this time around. Alongside details of which creatives will bring to life these stories from across the wider Star Wars galaxy, Star Wars: Visions season has also been given the perfect release date and is now scheduled to land on the streaming platform on May 4, 2023.
Revealed by the official Star Wars Twitter account, and much like the first season, Star Wars: Visions season 2 will be made up of shorts from animation studios from all over the world, including El Guiri (Spain), Cartoon Saloon (Ireland), Punkrobot (Chile), Aardman (United Kingdom), Studio Mir (South Korea) Studio La Cachette (France), 88 Pictures (India), D’art Shtajio (Japan), and Triggerfish (South Africa), with D’Art Shtajio’s short created in collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd. (United States).
“The reaction to the first volume of Star Wars: Visions blew us away. We were delighted that this project inspired and resonated with so many people,” James Waugh, Star Wars: Visions executive producer and senior vice president, Franchise Content & Strategy at Lucasfilm said of the show’s return.
“We always saw Star Wars: Visions as a framework for celebratory expressions of the franchise from some of the best creators working today. Animation is in a global renaissance, and we’re constantly staggered by the amount of creativity pushing the medium forward,” he continued. “With Volume 1, the imaginative minds of Japan’s anime industry were on full display. With Volume 2, we expanded our canvas to take audiences on a global tour of some of the most talented creators from around the world. We’re so proud to be able to reveal the line-up of studios we’ve assembled. Every short is incredible, full of heart, scope, imagination, and the values that make stories distinctly Star Wars — all while opening up bold new ways of seeing what a Star Wars story can be.”
While specific details remain under wraps, we now have some idea of what Star Wars: Visions season 2 will involve. The first episode, Sith, will come courtesy of El Guiri and is written and directed by Rodrigo Blaas, the Emmy Award-winning director who has worked on such hits as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Trollhunters, as well as the 2009 award-winning short film Alma.
Cartoon Saloon, meanwhile, will helm the episode Screecher’s Reach. Directed by Paul Young (My Father’s Dragon, WolfWalkers, Song of the Sea, and Viking Skool), the series is comprised of In the Stars by Punkrobot and director Gabriel Osorio (Soccer Girls, Bear Story), I Am Your Mother by Aardman Animations and directed by Magdalena Osinska (Wallace & Gromit’s The Great Sofa Caper, Share the Orange); Journey to the Dark Head by Studio Mir and director Hyeong Geun Park (Dota: Dragon’s Blood: Book 3, Lookism).
Further stories include The Spy Dancer by Studio La Cachette, directed by Julien Chheng (The Rabbi’s Cat, Mune, Ernest and Celestine); The Bandits of Golak from 88 Pictures and directed by Ishan Shukla (Schirkoa); The Pit by D’art Shtajio and Lucasfilm Ltd. And directed by LeAndre Thomas (The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Justin Ridge (Star Wars Resistance); and finally, Aau’s Song from Triggerfish and directors Nadia Darries (Stick Man, Highway Rat) and Daniel Clarke (Stick Man, The Snail and the Whale).
