Nearly a decade after its release, you might think that Stardew Valley has given up all its secrets. The beloved cozy farming game from solo dev ConcernedApe captured hearts when it came out in 2016. For many, the game remained a favorite, and many fans have racked up hundreds of hours of gameplay.
And yet, there are still plenty of little-known features hidden within the title. One of these was just rediscovered by Redditor skullyemptyhead, and it’s caused quite a stir in the responses. It turns out that there’s a way to change the style of your fishing bobber, but it’s so easy to miss that you might not know it exists.

The Feature Is Very Easy To Miss
Stardew Valley is a farming and cozy life sim where you can plant and harvest crops, mingle with the locals of Pelican Town, and unravel the surprisingly deep lore of the region. The waterways around the valley are rife with fish, so naturally, the farmer can also go fishing.
All Stardew Valley players start with a standard red and white bobber that sits on the water. What many don’t realize is that they aren’t stuck with this style for the entirety of the game. There are actually 39 different bobber styles, ranging from different color versions of the standard round bobber to cute options like a smiley face, rubber ducky, twig, sailboat, and much more.
A secret bobber style can be unlocked by equipping the Lucky Purple Shorts in the tackle slot. But what do you think you’ll catch with that?
If you’re feeling indecisive, you can even select the die and see a random style every time you cast your line. You can change your bobber style using the Bobber Machine, which is located inside Willy’s Fish Shop, to the right of the counter. And, you can unlock more styles by catching more types of fish.

Stardew Valley has many secrets, but the Bobber Machine is a feature that’s hidden in plain sight. The machine is right there for players to use, but since there’s no reason to go beyond the counter, many players never notice it exists.
The feature is so easy to miss, in fact, that fellow Redditor Stardusky_ writes: “Almost 500 hours and I haven’t even considered this as a thing that can happen!!!” The original Redditor admits that they “have no idea how many hundreds of hours I’ve spent playing Stardew” before they discovered they could do this.
Moments of delight and discovery are fairly common in Stardew Valley, which has many nooks and crannies to explore. Developer ConcernedApe has continued to add to and expand the game in the many years since it launched. Update 1.7 has officially been confirmed, ensuring that the title will continue to unearth secrets and hidden features for years to come.
