EqualyzAI, an African-centric AI startup, has launched an AI-powered platform designed to promote African languages through localised models and hyperlocal datasets.
This was disclosed by one of the company co-founders, Olubayo Adekanmbi, during the launch in Lagos on Friday in commemoration of International Mother Language Day.
The company, co-founded alongside Ife Adebara, seeks to make AI innovations inclusive and accessible across the continent.
“Our mission is to ensure that AI speaks our languages, understands our contexts, and solves our unique challenges. This is not just about technology; it’s about empowerment and inclusion, he said.
Adebara emphasised the role of language in AI development, stating, “Africa is home to over 2,000 languages, yet most AI models struggle to understand even a fraction of them. Our goal is to change this by developing AI that truly represents African linguistic diversity.”
He noted that EqualyzAI innovations include DataCollect, AfroSLM 1.0, a small language model designed to improve financial literacy in Yoruba and Hausa, and uLearn, an AI-powered tool that helps teachers generate lesson plans, notes, and quizzes in English and local languages.
The company said its approach involves collaboration with native speakers to develop AI solutions that reflect Africa’s diverse cultural and linguistic landscape.
