Stray bullet kills 12-year-old girl as police, kidnappers exchange gunfire in Edo

The Edo state police command has confirmed the death of a 12-year-old girl during a gun battle between security operatives and suspected kidnappers along the Fugar-Agenebode road in Etsako East LGA of the state.

Moses Yamu, the command’s spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.

Yamu said the incident occurred around 7:20 p.m. on Friday when armed men ambushed commuters, blocked the highway and opened fire, killing two people on the spot and abducting several others.

Following a distress call, a combined team of police officers from Agenebode, local vigilantes and hunters launched a rescue operation.

“During the encounter, a gun duel ensued along Obe Hill by the pipeline route leading to Ajaokuta,” the statement read.

The security team successfully rescued 14 kidnapped passengers alive.

“Unfortunately, a 12-year-old girl was fatally shot by the fleeing kidnappers during the crossfire,” the statement noted.

He said one female victim remained unaccounted for, adding that search efforts were ongoing to ensure her safe return.

Yamu quoted Monday Agbonika, the commissioner of police in the state, as commending the bravery of the joint security team.

“The command extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and assures the general public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served,” the statement added.
