Stunning stats show just how much of a superstar Erling Haaland is as ‘ridiculous’ Man City goal machine smashes Cristiano Ronaldo record with hat-trick of hat-tricks in Manchester derby

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life!”

Ally McCoist was completely speechless at Erling Haaland’s latest sensational scoring performance – and he won’t be the only legendary striker left stunned.

Man United had no answer for the brilliance of Haaland

Haaland looks destined to break every Premier League scoring record going after completing a remarkable hat-trick of hat-tricks in three home appearances – the first time that’s been achieved by any player in the league’s history.

The fact his third of the season came in the Manchester derby against Man United made it all the more sweeter as, despite Phil Foden also bagging a hat-trick to break a Lionel Messi stat and Jack Grealish enjoying his best game in a City shirt, the Norwegian dominated the headlines.

Haaland is the only story in town as he continued his unbelievable goalscoring run, with records tumbling already.

It’s easy to imagine that Premier League icon Alan Shearer would have had a sweat on watching Sunday’s 6-3 victory for Pep Guardiola’s men, looking nervously at his all-time Premier League goal record.

That tally of 260 goals has stood for nearly two decades, while his record for the most goals scored in a single season – 34 – has stood for almost 30 years, but they both look under threat when you watch Haaland do his stuff.

Legendary Rangers and Scotland striker McCoist was just one pundit to be left completely baffled by the 22-year-old.

“The goal for his hat-trick was superb, fantastic. How many times do we see him drift into that area and De Bruyne drifts that ball into the back-post and you think, ‘He’s not going to get that’, but Haaland is like Inspector Gadget and he presses a button in his wee body and his leg comes out from nowhere!

“It was just a joy to watch, Manchester City were absolutely unstoppable, unplayable.

“They won the title last year without a centre-forward, and now they have Haaland – dear me!

“I was asked how many goals I think he’d score in the league this season, and I said 45 – which I thought was a sensible answer – but if he stays fit…

And the stats just show how much of a superstar this young man is, with a host of all-time Premier League legends now looking up at Haaland in the record books.

Hat-trick hero

Haaland now holds the record for the quickest time to score three hat-tricks in the Premier League, having achieved that feat in just eight appearances – the closest to him is Michael Owen who took 48 games.

Fastest players to three Premier League hat-tricks

  • Erling Haaland: 8 apps
  • Michael Owen: 48 apps
  • Ruud van Nistelrooy: 59 apps
  • Fernando Torres: 64 apps
  • Andy Cole: 65 apps
  • Luis Suarez: 71 apps

Football’s next GOAT?

It is clear Haaland is destined for greatness when you also consider his record compared to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who were just nowhere near as potent in front of goal at this stage of their careers.

At the age of 22 Messi had scored 44 goals, and Ronaldo 50. Haaland? 170… and counting.

Ronaldo fuming

Ronaldo was left on the bench by manager Erik ten Hag for the derby, and cut a frustrated figure as the goals flew in, and the Portuguese great will be even more annoyed when he looks at Haaland’s hat-trick stats.

Haaland already has the same number of Premier League hat-tricks as CR7, who took a whopping 232 Premier League appearances to achieve the same feat across his two spells with United though he didn’t begin as a striker.

Ronaldo netted just one hat-trick during his first spell at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009, in a 6-0 thrashing of Newcastle, having got his other two hat-tricks for the Red Devils last season on his return to the club against Tottenham and Norwich.

Record-breaker

Haaland had a hand in five of Man City’s six goals against United – a record for the Manchester derby.

Golden Boot bound?

Haaland now has 17 total goal involvements in the Premier League – 14 goals, three assists.

That mean he is only NINE goals from last season’s Golden Boot winners Mohamed Salah and Heung-min Son, who finished the campaign on 23 goals.

France favourite

Haaland is also now on a list of just 14 players to be given a 10/10 by French publication L’Equipe in their famous player ratings.

Some other names among that list are Kylian Mbappe, Robert Lewandowski, Neymar and Lionel Messi… twice.

And we can be pretty sure he is not stopping there…
