A Los Angeles judge has shot down Suge Knight’s dreams of having his 28-year manslaughter prison sentence overturned.
The former Death Row Records co-founder filed an appeal back in 2023, but Los Angeles County Judge Laura F. Priver says that the disgraced music executive took too long to file the appeal and doubted that the filing was “sincere.”
Knight was sentenced to 28 years in prison after no contest to voluntary manslaughter in connection to the hit-and-run death of Terry Carter in 2015. He is eligible for parole in October 2034. He will be 69 years old.
“It is clear that the petitioner was not as isolated or as helpless to act as he wishes this court to believe,” Judge Priver wrote. “He was able to file the writ in a timely manner had he chosen to do so.”
But Suge’s legal team says that he was focused on other matters, including permanent prison housing, issues with his previous lawyer and Knight’s losing his vision in one eye. He reportedly only has 15% vision in his other eye.
“I find this decision to be shocking and unconscionable. I think the court has grossly erred in the decision it rendered. I think it is legally improper and the court did not follow the law,” Knight’s attorney, David Kenner, said in a statement.
