Alhassan Yusuf has reflected on his impressive performances for the Super Eagles during the 2026 Unity Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.
The New England Revolution midfielder played an important role as Nigeria secured their fourth consecutive Unity Cup title, making a strong statement on his return to the national team after a lengthy absence.
Yusuf had been out of the squad for some time and was left out of Nigeria’s final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Eagles finished third to claim a record ninth bronze medal.
The 25-year-old during an interview with quotes from The Blazing Musket, admitted he was delighted to be back in the national team and eager to prove he still had plenty to offer.
“Really good moment for me to show the coach what I can give to the team. I was kind of on and off, especially with the AFCON when we were off for the season, so I didn’t go. I wanted to show him that I can still give something to the team”, Yusuf said.

The New England Revolution midfielder was one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the Unity Cup, featuring in both matches and playing a crucial role in midfield throughout the tournament.
He capped off his impressive displays by scoring twice in Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Jamaica in the final, netting his first two goals for the Super Eagles.
Despite spending a long period away from the national team, Yusuf said adapting was straightforward because of the similarities between the style of play at New England Revolution and that of the Super Eagles.
“I would say we kind of play in a similar way, trying to progress the ball and get involved, and then we go to the attack”, he added.
“I think it really helped me when playing with the national team. We have so many similarities in the way we’re playing.”
Yusuf’s performances also earned praises from his teammates, who were far from surprised by the midfielder’s impact on his return to international football.
New England Revolution teammate Jackson Yueill highlighted the Nigerian star’s energy, technical ability and intelligence on the ball as key components to his game.
“He can run forever. It’s one of the qualities that I don’t think a lot of people see: his ability to cover ground”, Yueill said.
“I personally think his ability to turn out of spaces under pressure is very, very good. With the ball, he’s very good. He makes very smart plays, and he’s always available in tight situations. Playing with him has been a lot of fun.
“I think he’s deserving of those two goals. I think last preseason he had like four or five bangers, so he definitely has the goal-scoring capability.”
Yusuf will return to club action when Major League Soccer resumes on July 23, with New England Revolution taking on Toronto FC as they continue their push for a playoff place.
After that, the midfielder will hope to maintain his impressive form and retain his place in Eric Chelle’s squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which will begin in September.
