Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has been crowned Barnsley’s December Goal of the Month winner for his breathtaking strike in the Reds’ 2-1 comeback victory over Exeter City on December 14, Soccernet.football reports.

Powered by Copier Systems, the award recognises the midfielder’s first goal for the club since his arrival in the summer.

Nwakali’s moment of brilliance came early in the second half at St James Park, when he volleyed home from the edge of the box to level the score. The stunning effort came on his full League One debut and set the stage for Davis Keillor-Dunn’s winner just before the hour mark, ensuring a valuable three points for Barnsley.

Presented with his award at Oakwell by Reds fan and professional boxer Callum Simpson, Nwakali expressed his gratitude.

Taking to social media, he wrote: “Thankful to God and thanks to everyone who voted me to win the goal of the month. More good things to come.”

The accolade arrives at a crucial juncture for the 25-year-old, who has struggled for consistent game time since joining Barnsley from Portuguese side Chaves on a three-year deal in August 2024.

Despite limited starts in League One, Nwakali has gradually carved a role in Darrell Clarke’s plans, featuring in nine of the Reds’ last 13 league fixtures and impressing in cup competitions.

His goal not only highlighted his technical ability but also served as a turning point in his Barnsley career. Buoyed by his success, Nwakali started the next match, a commanding 3-0 win over Crawley, as he aims to secure a regular spot in the starting XI.

The 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner will hope his recent performances help propel Barnsley closer to their promotion ambitions.

The Reds currently sit fifth in League One, riding a wave of four consecutive victories and targeting a return to the Championship.
