Tehran backs upcoming negotiations in Pakistan following a 45-minute call between PM Shehbaz Sharif and President Masoud Pezeshkian, as Iranian leadership hails ceasefire terms and signals diplomatic engagement
Iran on Wednesday confirmed its participation in upcoming Islamabad talks following a telephone call between Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with both leaders welcoming the ceasefire with the United States, according to a statement from Pakistan Prime Minister’s office.
The telephonic conversation held on Wednesday afternoon lasted over 45 minutes.
“Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with His Excellency Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, this afternoon. During their warm and cordial conversation that lasted for over forty-five minutes, the Prime Minister conveyed his deep appreciation for the wisdom and sagacity of the Iranian leadership in agreeing to the ceasefire and for accepting the Prime Minister’s offer to host negotiations between Iran and the U.S. in Islamabad later this week,” read the statement.
The statement further said that PM Shehbaz Sharif also conveyed his respects to Iran’s supreme leadership.
President Pezeshkian, in response, thanked the Pakistani leadership for its efforts in helping facilitate a temporary ceasefire and extended his best wishes to the people of Pakistan.
“He (Pezeshkian) confirmed that Iran would take part in the Islamabad negotiations,” said the statement, adding that both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as diplomatic efforts move forward.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sharif also took to X to thank “brotherly countries” for extending invaluable and all out support towards reaching the ceasefire.
“As we proceed to *Islamabad Talks*, I wish to extend our deepest and sincere gratitude to our brotherly countries People’s Republic of China, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Republic of Türkiye, Arab Republic of Egypt and State of Qatar for extending invaluable and all out support towards reaching the ceasefire and giving peaceful diplomatic efforts a chance to seek a comprehensive and conclusive end to the conflict,” he wrote on X.

“I would also like to deeply appreciate and thank our brotherly countries of Gulf Cooperation Council, whose consistent support and commitment to peace and stability in the region remains quintessential for our efforts,” he added.
He said the leadership of all brotherly countries and United States of America demonstrated exceptional strategic foresight, sagacity and patience in giving peace a chance.
“I also thank all our partners and friends across the globe who have reached out and acknowledged Pakistan’s sincere efforts for the global peace. Let us all work together to forge a lasting peace in the region and beyond!” the Prime Minister added.
Separately, President Pezeshkian said the general principles sought by Iran had been accepted as part of the ceasefire arrangement with the United States.
He described the agreement as a result of national resilience and leadership, referencing sacrifices made during the conflict.
In a statement posted on X, he said Iran would continue to stand united “in diplomacy, in defence, in the streets or in providing services.”

Iran’s Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref on Wednesday struck a triumphant tone, declaring what he described as the emergence of a new global power centre.
Aref said that “history has turned a new page” and that “the world has welcomed a new centre of power,” adding that “the era of Iran has begun.”
