Terry Crews Gives Hopeful Update On Friday 4 Movie Possibility

Movie and TV actor Terry Crews just revealed a major update about a possible fourth film in the Friday franchise. So far, three movies in the comedy series have been released, starting with Friday in 1995. Two sequels, Next Friday and Friday After Next, followed in 2000 and 2002, respectively.

Aside from the short-lived animated TV show in 2007, the Friday franchise hasn’t been revisited in several years, and development on a new film called Last Friday has been slow-moving in recent years.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for his Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Replacer campaign, Crews sounded hopeful about a fourth Friday movie. The actor, host and former athlete expressed his interest in returning for another installment. He’s already told the producers, “Whatever you want to do, let’s do it!” Crews has no plans to delay the process.

One of the major speed bumps at the moment is just trying to get the cast members’ schedules lined up at the right time to make it happen.

Crews acknowledged the losses of John Witherspoon (Willie Jones) in 2019, Star Trek actor Tommy Lister Jr. (Deebo) in 2020 and Anthony Johnson (Ezal) in 2021, and admitted that he really wants everyone to reunite before they lose even more cast members.

Crews always has fond memories whenever he re-watches the Friday movies, which he likened to Pulp Fiction in terms of the “mood and texture,” and called the cinematography “excellent.”

The actor is proud of his contributions and can relate to his character, Damon Pearly, who is similar to a lot of men he’s known in real life. In fact, Crews admitted that he ventured into the comedy genre in order to “stop from crying“. He further elaborated, stating that it wasn’t great to constantly be “running from guys like” Damon, who has a tough demeanor.

While he doesn’t want to encounter people like Damon in the real world, Crews loves playing “bad guys,” so diving back into the Friday franchise for another film would be so much fun.

I told them that I’m open. I said, “Whatever you want to do, let’s do it!” It’s really a matter of trying to get all the gang back together. We’ve been talking about this for years, and I just want to be able to do it before we start losing people. We lost John Witherspoon, we lost Tiny Lister…There’s a lot of guys that are not here anymore. So, it’s always like, “Why can’t we get this together?” I’m not going to be the one to hold it up, I promise you that. Because every time I see it, it really has the same mood and texture of Pulp Fiction. When you look at Friday, the cinematography was excellent. There’s a reason why some of these things stay in your mind. A lot of movies now are so digital and too clean. They look antiseptic. And I thought, “This is such a beautiful Christmas film,” and it’s within a scene that you’ve never seen before. It was truly original. When I look at Katt Williams and Mike Epps, I know it was authentic. I guess that’s the best way I could put it, and that’s why I’m proud of it. I knew guys like Damon, so you know that when I tell you I had to do comedy to stop from crying, it was because I was running from guys like that. But I’ll do Damon again. I like playing bad guys!

Last Friday was greenlit back in 2017, with a script being finished in 2019. Witherspoon’s death at age 77 delayed the pre-production process, and then everything came to a screeching halt after Lister’s passing, with various cast members blaming Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema for not fast-tracking the film while all the original stars were still alive.

The tension between the studio and cast increased when Warner Bros. passed on scripts written by Friday creator and star Ice Cube. In the movies, his character, Craig Jones, faces all sorts of trouble and misfortune after being fired for allegedly stealing cardboard boxes.

Fortunately, Ice Cube’s relationship with Warner Bros. drastically improved in 2024 with new leadership at the studio. Mike DeLuca, who was the head of New Line when the Friday franchise began, is now the CEO of Warner Bros. Pictures, which helped Last Friday finally move out of development purgatory.

It’s unclear if any of Ice Cube’s rejected scripts will be approved by Warner Bros. now or if he’ll have to write a brand-new one.

For now, though, the future of the Friday franchise is looking brighter than it has in years. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but Crews won’t hesitate to sign on the dotted line to reunite with Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Mike Epps and the rest of the cast.
