The Batman 2 Gets Official Title and Release Date, Won't Cross Over with the DCU

Today’s news has been dominated by several big announcements from James Gunn and Peter Safran about the titles they have planned as part of the new DCU, but a significant update has also come in for the Batman story that’s set within its own unconnected universe. Premiering in theaters last year, The Batman was a monumental success, and it has since been announced that a sequel is officially in the works. Progress has been a bit slow-moving, though the film now has an official release date along with a confirmed title, courtesy of DC Studios.

Per Variety, the sequel to The Batman will officially be titled as The Batman Part II. It’s also been revealed that the movie will be released in movie theaters on Oct. 3, 2025. While James Gunn and Peter Safran shared details on some of their projects they have planned for the DCU, they gave no specifics about what will happen in The Batman Part II. Despite rumors that Gunn and Safran were considering making The Batman part of the DCU, it’s also been confirmed that the Matt Reeves-directed films will not be connected, set in their own cinematic universe with separate characters and storylines.

The Batman Part II will also mark the one of the first titles to be released under DC Studios’ “DC Elseworlds” banner. The movies and TV shows released as DC Elseworlds titles will signify that these projects are not connected to the DCU. That will also apply to the upcoming Joker sequel that’s also in the works with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, as well as the planned Superman standalone film written by Ta-Nehisi Coates that’s confirmed to still be in the works after a serious lack of updates since 2021.

The Batman Part II will not affect what happens with the Dark Knight in the DCU. Gunn and Safran have announced that their version of Batman introduced in this new continuity will start with the film The Brave and the Bold. The movie will follow Bruce Wayne and the Damian Wayne version of Robin. No casting information has been revealed at this time with the film still in its early stages, but a new actor will be brought in to play the new incarnation of Batman.

Meanwhile, while fans will have to wait until 2025 to see what happens next with Robert Pattinson’s Batman on the big screen, that franchise will first take a detour on HBO Max with a spinoff series. Following Colin Farrell’s Penguin, the show is set to start filming next month and will arrive years earlier than The Batman Part II. However, a release date has not yet been announced.

The Batman Part II will be released on Oct. 3, 2025.
