The iPhone 15 Pro might have a new low-energy chip
The Apple iPhone 15 Pro might come with a new ultra-low energy chipset.
An anonymous source shared with MacRumours that the new ultra-low energy chipset will replace the current low-energy mode that enables users to locate their iPhone via Find My. With the new chipset, Find My and Apple Pay Express mode can still be used if the device is turned off or if the battery has run out.
The source added the new chip will power the solid-state buttons including an “action” button that will replace the mute switch. The new chip can reportedly sense capacitive button presses, holds, and even a variant of the 3D Touch even when the iPhone 15 Pro is off. Apple is believed to be testing the low-energy capacitive features with and without Taptic Engine feedback while the device is powered off.
Rumours of a “buttonless” iPhone 15 design surfaced in October last year when analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared the volume and power buttons will adopt a solid-state design. The solid-state buttons will use an additional two Taptic Engines.
Apple supplier Cirrus Logic also corroborated the report by saying “a strategic customer” is expected to “bring a new HPMS component to market in smartphones next year.” Purported CAD renders of the iPhone 15 Pro reveal volume controls which look like capacitive buttons.
