The Witcher Online Will Keep Us Busy Till The Witcher 4 Drops

The Witcher 3 is often heralded as a benchmark for single-player games, offering a compelling protagonist and bespoke story meant for one person to experience at a time. That being said, it can still get a little lonely out there. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to wander the Continent with friends, however, you’re finally in luck.

The new mod Witcher Online, courtesy of Nexus Mods user rejuvenate, adds unofficial multiplayer support to The Witcher 3. Uploaded on January 9 and last updated on January 13, the mod is still in its early stages, with patches so far focused on addressing bugs. A Witcher Online server is provided 24/7, so users won’t have to set up their own servers to play with friends.

The Witcher 3 Online Is Here

The Perfect Fan-Made Solution

Witcher Online, understandably, has some limits. The focus of the mod is on adding other players to the world, not on being able to directly cooperate with them. Each user is in their own game instance when fighting, completing quests, talking to NPCs, and everything else, but they can see each other exploring the world and completing their tasks.

Even so, what’s been accomplished here is undeniably impressive. Players can sit down together in taverns, emote, and chat, providing a light version of an MMO-like social experience. Movement sync and combat sync also go a long way in enhancing the immersion, making it possible to watch other players swim, cast signs, and more.

Modders Really Can Do Anything

So Many Impressive Mods Are Out There

The best part is that you can play the whole story from start to finish in Witcher Online, meaning that the online experience doesn’t make any critical compromises. You can also customize your appearance to look like NPCs from the game or your own design, so the mod won’t just result in endless Geralts running around.

Witcher Online requires the use of the Chill Out mod from crthdr, which allows players to sit at benches, eat, fish, and more at predefined spots, along with a couple of other mods. Full details can be found here.

Witcher Online probably isn’t the best way to play The Witcher 3 for the first time, unless you’re simply unwilling to give it a go without the social element. For those who have been running around in the game for a decade, however, this could be the perfect way to add some new life to The Witcher 3 while everyone waits for the next installment of the franchise to arrive.
