Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the continued wave of killings, kidnappings and violent attacks in different parts of the country, describing Nigeria as a nation of unending tragedy.
Obi, in a statement on Monday, said recent incidents in Adamawa State, Anambra State and Sokoto State have once again plunged the country into grief.
“In the last few days, our nation has once again been thrown into mourning by a series of heartbreaking tragedies across Adamawa, Anambra, and Sokoto States,” he said.
“From the killing of innocent worshippers, to the deaths of seven peaceful women protesters in Adamawa, to the continued attacks by bandits in Sokoto that have claimed the lives of seven more Nigerians, we are confronted with the painful daily reality that insecurity continues to threaten the very soul of our nation.”
He warned that no nation seeking progress can normalise such violence.
Obi stressed that security remains the foundation for national development, noting that every sector collapses in the face of insecurity.
“No country aspiring to growth, stability, and prosperity can accept this level of violence as normal. Without security, our schools cannot function, our farms cannot thrive, our businesses cannot grow, and our people cannot live with dignity,” he added.
According to him, the tragic incidents in Anambra highlight a failure to safeguard places of worship, while the death of the protesting women in Adamawa exposes the “deep breakdown in trust” between citizens and security agencies.
He said the killings in Sokoto further show that banditry remains persistent despite repeated government assurances.
“Nigeria cannot continue like this,” he warned.
The former presidential candidate insisted that Nigeria needs leadership that places premium value on human life and guarantees justice for victims of violence.
“We need leadership that prioritises the protection of every Nigerian life, regardless of region, religion, gender, or social status,” he said.
“We deserve leaders who would provide justice for innocent citizens who are facing these calamities every day.”
Beyond policing and military action, Obi stressed the need to address the underlying drivers of insecurity, poverty, unemployment, weak institutions and lack of opportunity.
“A nation where millions are left behind will always struggle with unrest,” he stated.
He reiterated his long-held view that investments in education, healthcare and economic empowerment are essential to building a secure and stable country.
‘A New Nigeria Is Possible’
Obi urged Nigerians to honour the memory of victims by recommitting to building a country where leadership is driven by empathy and accountability.
“As we mourn the lives lost, we must also renew our commitment to building a Nigeria where such tragedies become a thing of the past,” the former Governor of Anambra said.
“May the souls of all those we have lost rest in peace. May their families find comfort. And may we, as a nation, find the courage to demand and build a safer, secure, and more united Nigeria. A New Nigeria is Possible.”
