Thor Recreates Mjolnir with a Dark, Low-Tech Replacement

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Mortal Thor #2!Anyone whoever thought Thor’s hammer was brutal is going to be shocked when they see the latest change to the Asgardian’s classic weapon. Thor has lost his godhood and is now living as a mortal man. But he’s just as good with a hammer, and he’s made some powerful, non-MCU-friendly changes to his weapon of choice.

In The Mortal Thor #2 by Al Ewing and Pasqual Ferry, Thor, or rather, Sigurd Jarlson as he’s now known, recovers from the previous night fighting Roxxon’s hired thugs. A friendly neighbor helps Thor mend his wounds, and before he heads out to face Roxxon’s people again, Thor asks his neighbor if she has any elastic on-hand.

Thor tracks down Roxxon’s hired guns to a bar, and he arrives with a hammer in hand. But in lieu of the magical enchantment of Mjolnir, Thor has added the borrowed elastic to his hammer’s handle, allowing it to snap back to Thor with every throw. Thor brutalizes the gang and leaves them with a warning to change their ways.

No Magic, But Thor is as Dangerous as Ever

Thor’s history has been rewritten so that he is not a God of Thunder, but an average man. As Sigurd, Thor works as a laborer, with only faint recollections of who he previously was. But Thor remains a hero and when Roxxon’s gang tried making an example out of him, Thor responded with a hammer and brutalized everyone he could.

Using elastic as a means to have his hammer return to him is a creative thing, especially when Sigurd doesn’t exactly recall Mjolnir or how it operated. But still, it’s an incredibly effective weapon, and it doesn’t shy away from showing what actually happens when people are clobbered with a hard-hitting weapon, unlike the MCU’s more sanitized approach.

MCU Fans Won’t See This Kind of Hammer Action On-Screen

Thor’s movies have him generally using his hammer on monsters, aliens, and robots. But Sigurd’s is just a common construction tool and the damage he’s doing is way too real. While it’s incredibly cool seeing a street-level Thor in action, it’s the kind of thing fans won’t see in a Thor movie (at least, as long as they’re rated PG-13).
