A North Carolina jury has ordered social media influencer Brenay Kennard to pay $1.75 million after finding her responsible for breaking up a Durham couple’s marriage.
Kennard, who boasts nearly 3 million followers on TikTok and another 274,000 on Instagram, was accused of seducing her manager, Tim Montague, and having an affair that ultimately ended his marriage to Akira Montague.
The civil suit, filed in Durham County Court, claimed Kennard’s actions caused emotional devastation and the breakdown of the Montagues’ family.
“She has received justice from losing her husband and the father of her children,” said Robonetta Jones, attorney for Akira Montague, following the verdict.
The jury found Kennard liable for criminal conversation and alienation of affection…two old-fashioned but still enforceable legal claims in North Carolina, one of the few states that allows a spouse to sue someone for interfering in a marriage.

According to court documents, Akira and Tim Montague married in October 2018. Akira alleged that Kennard’s affair with Tim caused her mental anguish, health problems, and robbed her children of a two-parent home.
After the verdict, Kennard claimed Akira had already accepted that her marriage was over long before the affair began.
“She gave her consent,” Kennard said. “She said it was okay because she knew her marriage was over with, and it was done.”
