PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has approved a new scholarship scheme aimed at enabling students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to pursue higher education in Nigerian universities, beginning from the next academic session.
The announcement was made during a joint press briefing in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, where President Tinubu appeared alongside Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre.
The initiative will be overseen by a joint Nigeria-OECS committee focused on facilitating its implementation.
“The OECS is very close to us in Africa,” Tinubu said. “We’re advancing opportunities in business, education, capacity building, agriculture, and food security. We will stay committed to this partnership.”
As part of broader diplomatic efforts, President Tinubu also revealed that discussions are ongoing to introduce visa waivers for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS countries.
Responding to questions about challenges in bilateral engagement, Tinubu stated, “I don’t dwell on difficulties. I focus on solving problems. A straight path gets us to our goals efficiently.”
Prime Minister Pierre welcomed the scholarship programme, describing it as a “timely and practical expression of solidarity.”
He also noted that key issues such as visa facilitation, air travel connectivity, and tourism were discussed during the high-level engagement.
“We anticipate that students will commence their studies in Nigeria by the next academic year,” Pierre said. “Our joint committee will also address matters relating to education, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.”
Earlier in the visit, President Tinubu addressed a special joint session of Saint Lucia’s Parliament, where he presented his vision for stronger ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean region.
