President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has strongly condemned the gruesome killing of 12 travellers in Plateau State, describing the incident as barbaric and an affront to the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens.
The victims, including the father and brother of a groom, were reportedly returning from a wedding in Zaria, Kaduna State, en route to Jos, Plateau State, when they were ambushed and lynched by unknown assailants.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed deep outrage over the killings and demanded that the culprits be brought to justice without delay.
“This heinous action is unacceptable and barbaric. It is an attack not just on the victims but on our collective humanity and the principles of freedom and coexistence,” President Tinubu said.
He directed the Nigerian Police Force to collaborate with other security and intelligence agencies to apprehend those responsible for the crime, emphasizing that “freedom of movement by all citizens is non-negotiable.”
“We will not tolerate any attempt by anyone or group of people to curtail that fundamental freedom through acts of extreme violence and fear,” the President warned.
Tinubu also tasked the Plateau State Government with taking swift and decisive action to break the recurring cycle of violence that has plagued parts of the state.
“The Government of Plateau State must take decisive action in handling these vicious cycles of violence. The state government must work with security agents to get to the root of this recent incident and use it as a deterrent against future occurrences,” he said.
The President extended his condolences to the bereaved families and commiserated with the governments and people of Kaduna and Plateau States.
As tensions rise in the affected communities, President Tinubu urged residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory attacks, assuring that the perpetrators will be brought to book.
“This government is committed to upholding law and order. No one involved in this tragedy will escape justice,” he affirmed.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed calls for intensified security measures across Nigeria’s troubled regions.
