PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has officially flagged off the construction of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) annex office in Abuja, describing the project as a strong testament to Nigeria’s dedication to credible elections and institutional independence.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony today, Tinubu emphasized the national importance of the project, saying:
“It is a great honour and sense of purpose that I stand before you to flag off the construction of a new national office — the annex of the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering INEC — not just with infrastructure but also with the legal, policy, and financial support needed to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
“This project is more than just a building,” Tinubu said. “It represents our collective resolve to strengthen democracy, uphold electoral integrity, and support the autonomy of our institutions.”
The President praised INEC’s vital role in Nigeria’s democratic journey, calling the commission the backbone of the country’s electoral system.
“INEC’s work in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections forms the foundation of the people’s trust in their government and in the democratic process,” he added.
He noted that the new edifice is envisioned as more than a physical space, but a hub for innovation, training, planning, and logistics that will enhance electoral administration across the country.
President Tinubu also commended the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, for initiating the project, acknowledging his efforts as a meaningful contribution to the nation’s democratic development.
“By initiating this project, the FCT Minister has taken another important step toward the protection of our democracy. I salute your vision, courage, and dedication to national progress,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the leadership and staff of both the FCTA and INEC for their resilience and commitment to building stronger democratic institutions.
Addressing Nigerians, the President reminded the public that democracy is a continuous process:
“Democracy is not a destination but a journey. Together, let us strengthen our institutions, safeguard our freedoms, and protect our future.”
He concluded by expressing hope that the new INEC office would serve as a lasting symbol of democracy, transparency, accountability, and national unity.
