Tinubu Govt Finalizes Plan To Construct ₦1.5 Trillion Light Rail In Kano

The Federal Government has concluded plans to construct a ₦1.5 trillion light rail line in Kano metropolis to ease transportation challenges.

The Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, confirmed the development while addressing journalists in Kano.

He noted that the Kano Metropolis Light Rail Project, valued at $1 billion (about ₦1.5 trillion), was already in the procurement stage.

“For those that travelled abroad, especially to Europe and Asia, they have seen such projects and know their importance. The project will immensely add value to the economy of the state when completed,” Bichi said.

Addressing claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has neglected the North, Bichi dismissed such suggestions as unfounded.

“It is funny for some people to say President Tinubu is not interested in this part of the country. I am the Chairman of Appropriation, and I know what the President has done for the North,” he said.

According to him, the President has rolled out major initiatives in infrastructure, health, agriculture, education, and security across the region.

Bichi listed some of the ongoing and completed infrastructure projects in the North, including:

Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project. Near completion.
Kaduna-Abuja Road (400km) – contract revoked and re-awarded; new contractor already making progress, with completion expected by the end of Q1 next year.
Kano-Hadejia Road (200km) – fully completed.
Kano Northern Bypass – costing over ₦250 billion.

Bichi explained that he was in Kano for the All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting to plan ahead of the 2027 general elections and to express solidarity with former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

“Last general elections, we gave the President over 500,000 votes in Kano, the highest from any state. We want to strategise ahead of 2027. The meeting was also to show support for Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje. The man has done extremely well when he was the National Chairman of the APC, delivering many PDP states to the APC,” he added.
