The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has hinted that his principal may give priority to G-20 countries in his long-awaited ambassadorial appointments.
Bwala, in a post on 𝕏 on Monday, said the President was mindful of the delay in releasing the list, attributing it to “funding challenges affecting Nigerian foreign missions.”
He stressed that while concerns had mounted over the matter, Tinubu could strategically focus on G-20 nations given their “significant economic partnerships with Nigeria.”
Bwala assured that the situation would be resolved soon, noting that effective representation abroad remained a priority for the administration.
He wrote, “Mr. President has acknowledged the delays in the ambassadorial list, primarily due to funding constraints affecting our foreign embassies, an issue I am diligently addressing. Despite the surrounding clamour, the President can strategically prioritise appointments to G20 nations, recognising their critical economic partnerships with us. The ambassadorial list will be resolved promptly, ensuring effective representation.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s former Foreign Minister and diplomat, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, is billed to participate in the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Gambari, who recently joined other eminent personalities in Nairobi, Kenya, for a five-day African Union (AU) review of governance, peace and security frameworks, described his work with the AU panel as underscoring “Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa’s search for sustainable peace and security.”
The Nairobi session, held between September 1 and 5, was chaired by former South African Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, with members including former Egyptian Foreign Minister Amre Moussa, former Ugandan Foreign Minister Sam Kutesa, and Chad’s ex-UN Under-Secretary-General Mahamet Saleh Annadif.
Gambari disclosed that he would deliver a keynote address at the African Economic Global Convergence (AEGC) Summit on September 21, where he will also be honoured with the AEMA Black Prize for Excellence in International Service and Diplomacy.
On the same day, he is expected to feature in a presidential roundtable tagged “From Ezulwini to an Equitable World Order: Power, Peace, Prosperity and Reparations,” organised by the Africa Governance Institute and the Open Society Foundations, to mark 20 years of the Ezulwini Consensus on Africa’s push for permanent representation on the UN Security Council.
Later on September 25, Gambari will chair a high-level roundtable on “Unlocking Energy, Oil & Gas, Minerals, Aviation and Maritime Opportunities in the Gulf of Guinea: A Roadmap for Peace and Security,” convened by The New Diplomat.
