President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally inaugurated the new leadership of the National Population Commission, bringing in a fresh chairman, two commissioners, and five permanent secretaries.
The swearing-in took place on Wednesday during the opening session of the Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa.
At the brief ceremony, the president administered the oath of office on the new NPC chairman, Aminu Yusuf, marking the beginning of his tenure after months of anticipation within the commission.
Members of the council, ministers, and senior government officials were present at the event.
Yusuf’s appointment followed his confirmation by the Senate on October 22, 2025. He represents Niger State on the commission.
Alongside him, the president also swore in Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State as commissioners of the National Population Commission.
The ceremony also featured the swearing-in of five newly appointed permanent secretaries. Their deployment, according to presidency sources, is expected to boost administrative efficiency across the federal ministries.
Yusuf replaces Nasir Isa Kwara, who had been appointed in 2020 and completed his term earlier in the year.
His emergence as chairman aligns with the decision of the Council of State, which approved his appointment in October as part of broader reforms aimed at repositioning the NPC ahead of future population exercises.
The president, while addressing the new appointees, urged them to uphold transparency and professionalism, stressing that their work remains crucial to national planning, resource allocation, and development policy.
The NPC under its new leadership is expected to intensify preparations for upcoming demographic assignments, especially as discussions around a national census continue to resurface.
